Mr James Adeshina, immediate past chairman, Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Lagos State, says President Muhammadu Buhari has lived up to expectation of Nigerians with his assent to the amended Electoral Act on Friday.
Adeshina, Chairman, African Action Congress (AAC) in Lagos state, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), congratulated Nigerians on the presidential assent, which he said, would aid the conduct of credible elections in the nation.
Adeshina said: “We congratulate Nigerians and appreciate President Buhari for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 into law.
“The president has been able to fulfil the will of the people in a very critical period that political parties are preparing for the 2023 election.
“I believe that this development is in the best interest of deepening democracy in Nigeria and awakening the hope of the electorate to exercise their constitutional right to vote in the upcoming elections without fear of their votes not being counted.”
The chairman, however, advised the President to do more in improving the security architecture of the country.
He said that efforts must be made to create a more enabling environment for Nigerians to fulfil their dreams and aspirations.
NAN reports that President Buhari signed the long-awaited Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 into law.
The President, who highlighted the contents and advantages of the Act, urged the National Assembly to immediately amend section 84 of the Act, in line with the nation’s 1999 Constitution as amended.
The President expressed the hope that the law would further promote sound electoral processes and good governance in the country.
