Panic as gunmen kill 1, abduct many in Kogi

Gunmen on Friday resumed their operations in parts of Kogi West, with reported multiple abductions in Kabba, headquarters of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, and Lokoja the State capital, forcing people to now live in fear in the areas.

It was gathered that In the ancient town of Kabba which has suffered serial attacks in the last month, the gunmen killed a man, and abducted four others including two chieftaincy title holders, while in Lokoja they were said to have kidnapped two persons along Zone 8 to Crusher Road.

In Kabba, the kidnappers were said to have first attacked the Headmaster of Otu Egunbe primary school around Ayedun and whisked him away. The headmaster was said to be on his way to Egbeda for a program.

The Gunmen then proceeded to Kakun -Kabba, for further abductions. A source said the gunmen came into the community around 8:30 in the morning.

During the attack, a Chieftain of the community, Chief Raphael Tolufashe Asa was shot dead while his daughter was abducted.

Also abducted was another Chieftain of the community, Chief Obamakun Maji, and a Fulani man whose name was yet to be ascertained.

The gunmen have made contact with families of the victims and demanded for N30 million ransom as a collective fee for their freedom.

The state Police Public Relation Officer, DSP William Aya who confirmed the story however said security personnel have been mobilized to secure release of the victims.

The abduction is the fourth in series within the past 5 weeks. First the Kabba Prison attack in which five people were killed and about 200 inmates set free. Not long after, three poultry farmers were abducted, then Sunday service attack on ECWA church and the Friday attack, all within the same community.

The worsening insecurity has forced residents and travellers around to now live in fear.
