Superstar footballer, Lionel Messi, could not hold back tears on Thursday when he upturned a record that legendary striker, Pele (Edson Arantes do Nascimento), had held for ages.
Pele was Latin America’s highest commander of international goals until Thursday when Messi jumped over him with two goals.
Before Thursday, Pele led the pack with 77 goals while Messi had 76.
But he scored three goals for Argentina, against Bolivia, now moving him to 79.
He said amid tears of joy: “I really wanted to be able to enjoy it,” Messi said after the match. “I waited a long time for this, I looked for it and I dreamed of it. It’s a unique moment for the way it happened after so much waiting.
“There was no better way to celebrate this than to be here. My mother, my brothers are in the stands… They suffered a lot and today, they are here celebrating. I’m very happy.”
