Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, has described as Unislamic the culture of taking cattle across places in search of food.
The system has widely been dubbed open grazing and it has generated a lot of heat in Nigeria, especially when many governors decided to ban it.
It led to crises, violence and mistrust, fuelling ethnic problems within the Nigerian space.
While Southern governors have in unison banned it, some of their counterparts in the North have kicked against it.
The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubalar Malami, as well as President Muhammdu Buhari, are insisting on open grazing, with an instruction that old grazing routes should be sought.
But in an interciew on ‘Channels Television’ on Monday, Masari said it was wrong to rear animals that people could not feed if not taken round.
He said, “Herdsmen should stay in one place. Roaming about should not be encouraged. In fact, for us, it is un-Islamic. Why do you have animals that you cannot feed and you have to go to other people’s land and farm and you say that is right? I don’t think it is right.
“We intend to have a law banning (cattle) roaming but before we do that, we would make provisions for where the animals would stay.”
