The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, has said that corps members can be trained for war.
The DG said this during an interview with Channels TV, saying:
“Corps members are part of our national defence policy. Where there is a serious war, they can be trained.”
Some stakeholders, including lawmakers, have suggested that the NYSC programme, which is compulsory for all Nigerians who graduate from the university before the age of 30, be scrapped.
The DG has however repeatedly countered this suggestion, saying the scheme was still very valuable to all the parties involved.
He also pointed that corps members were highly educated, so, they could be trained for soldiering.
According to the DG, corps members are moulded within the short three weeks in camp and this is possible because of the knowledge they possess.
Some concerned citizens are however not in agreement with this.
Some claim that this as an opportunity for the military to run away from war and send innocent citizens to die.
Many indeed say it to be an expensive joke.
