The lecture titled ‘Courage, Scholarship and the Revitalisation of Traditions: The Life and Legacy of Professor Sophie Bosede Oluwole’ will be delivered by scholar at Havard University, USA, Prof. Jacob Kehinde Oluponna.
While the lecture starting at 10 am will have popular politician, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as the ‘Guest of Honour’, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, is expected to be the ‘Royal Father of the Day’.
According to a programme realeasd by Oluwole’s family, she will be buried in her Ibafo, Ogun State home on Friday, April 26.
The African philosopher, nicknamed Mamalawo by her students, died on December 23 after a protracted illness.
She was 83.
Among other feats, .Oluwole was the first Nigerian female doctorate degree holder in philosophy and a practitioner of Yoruba philosophy.
She studied History, Geography and Philosophy at the University of Lagos and eventually settled on philosophy.
Following her first degree, she was employed in UNILAG as an assistant lecturer in 1972, and went on to complete her PhD in philosophy at the University of Ibadan.
The first female doctorate degree holder in philosophy in Nigeria and professor taught African Philosophy at UNILAG for six years between 2002 and 2008.
Among other people who have mourned Oluwole, President Muhamadu Buhari, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, joined members of the family, the academia and other close associates in mourning the philosopher.
He noted that the deceased had through her teachings and works celebrated the Yoruba culture, history and worldview, and reminded the world that within pristine traditions are values that promote the ideals of democracy, fairness, equity and justice.
Buhari said that the deceased would be honoured and remembered for her commitment in promoting African tradition, culture, knowledge and languages.
