A Federal High Court in Lagos State has sentenced a 20-year-old man, Sodiq Kazeem, to two years imprisonment for trafficking in 400g of Cannabis Sativa (Hemp).
Kazeem had pleaded guilty to a count charge of drug trafficking preferred by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The charge was filed before Justice Chuka Obiozor.
Following the guilty plea, the court reviewed the facts of the case, with the prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, tendering some documents in evidence.
The documents include a written statement of the defendant, a drug analysis form, a request for scientific aid form and a remnant of the banned substance.
The court admitted and marked them as exhibits.
The prosecutor urged the court to convict and sentence Kazeem based on his plea and evidence adduced by prosecution.
Obiozor accordingly convicted and sentenced Kazeem, directing that the sentence should begin from the date of his arrest.
He also imposed a fine of N100,000 on Kazeem.
According to the NDLEA, Kazeem was arrested on Nov. 23, 2020, at Ile-epo in Ikorodu, Lagos State, while dealing on hemp weighing 400g.
Drug trafficking contravenes the provisions of Sections 11(c) of the NDLEA Act of 2004.
