Some 28 square kilometres of Mount Kilimanjaro has been burned by a fire, which continued to blaze for a fourth day on Wednesday, authorities said.
Some 500 people are still trying to put out the flames, officials at the Tanzania National Parks Authority, the authority’s Chief Executive, Allan Kijazi, said.
Tanzanian Minister of Tourism, Hamisi Kigwangalla, visited the site on Wednesday and urged firefighters to make concerted efforts to extinguish the blaze.
At 5,895 metres, Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, formed by a dormant volcano near East Africa’s Rift Valley.
It is a key tourist attraction.
