The Kwara Government says it will sanction unregistered waste contractors who engage in illegal and unwholesome waste collection in the state.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mrs Funke Oyedun gave the warning in Ilorin on Wednesday, at a meeting with the Kwara State Commercial Refuse Contractors (KSCRC).
Oyedun disclosed that a taskforce would be constituted for proper monitoring and supervision of waste contractors’ activities in the state, adding that violators would be penalised.
She described activities of unregistered waste contractors as a threats to the progress of the state owing to the illegal services rendered to the public and improper waste disposal.
The commissioner stressed the need for collective engagement of stakeholders to achieve success in waste management.
Oyedun reiterated commitment of the ministry to work in snergy with state environmental protection agency to curb illegal waste collection activities.
The Director of the KSCRC, Mr Ajayi Oladeji appreciated the government’s efforts at ensuring a healthy environment for the citizens.
Oladeji, however, urged the government to provide enabling environment for waste contractors to enhance their operations in the state.
He called for intensified public enlightenment and enforcement of waste disposal regulations to encourage waste management in line with best practices.
The Chairman also called on the state government to provide enabling environment for waste contractors to access loans through the Ministry of Enterprise, to boost their businesses.
