The Zamfara State House of Assembly has passed a resolution supporting the proposed constitutional amendment for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.

The Speaker, Bilyaminu Moriki, disclosed this on Monday in Gusau while addressing newsmen.

The National Assembly had on Sept. 16 transmitted the Constitution Alteration Bill seeking to establish State Police Services to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval.

The bill, which was passed by both chambers of the National Assembly, requires approval by at least two-thirds of the 36 state Houses of Assembly before the process can be concluded.

Moriki said the Zamfara Assembly supported the bill to complement ongoing efforts by the Federal and state governments to address security challenges.

He said the establishment of state police would provide additional support to existing security agencies in tackling insecurity.

“Our resolution is in line with the efforts of the federal government and particularly Gov. Dauda Lawal towards addressing security challenges in Zamfara and Nigeria as a whole,” he said.

On the recent defection of eight lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress, Moriki said it would not affect the activities of the House.

He explained that six of the lawmakers were among eight members suspended by the Assembly since Feb. 26, 2024, over alleged gross misconduct, conspiracy, mischief, contempt of the House and violation of its Standing Orders.

He added that one of the affected lawmakers was no longer a member because the House had declared his seat vacant.

Moriki urged the public to distinguish between the lawmakers’ political decisions and the disciplinary actions taken against them.

“The seventh Assembly remains committed to the rule of law, legislative integrity and the protection of public institutions.

“The House remains stable, functional and fully engaged in legislative activities,” he added.

The Oyo State House of Assembly had also on Sept. 30 passed the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, seeking to provide a constitutional framework for the establishment and operation of State Police Services across the country.
