The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has suspended its two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government following the release of eight months’ arrears of the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Teaching and Non-Teaching Allowance (CONTTA) owed its members.
The decision was contained in a notification signed by SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, on Sunday in Abuja.
Ibrahim said the union’s National Administrative Committee, acting on behalf of its National Executive Council, approved the suspension after the government released the arrears on October 7. The ultimatum began on October 5 over outstanding entitlements.
He said the decision reflected the union’s commitment to constructive engagement, peaceful dialogue and industrial harmony in Nigerian universities.
However, Ibrahim urged the Federal Government to address other outstanding demands, including one-year arrears of the 25 and 35 per cent salary awards approved in 2023 and two months’ withheld salaries from 2022.
He also called on state governments that had yet to implement the 2026 agreement signed with the union to fulfil their obligations and pay outstanding arrears.
Ibrahim reaffirmed SSANU’s commitment to dialogue while urging the government to take concrete steps to resolve outstanding issues and protect the welfare of university workers.
