The Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, has promised to redirect trillions of naira spent on political privileges towards education, healthcare and infrastructure.
A statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by Mark Adebayo, Chief Media and Communications Adviser to the Adebayo-Bugaje presidential campaign, said an SDP-led administration would introduce strict fiscal measures to end the use of public funds to finance the lavish lifestyles of political officeholders.
Adebayo blamed Nigeria’s economic difficulties on excessive government spending on political privileges at the expense of human development.
“We will stop Nigerians from subsidising the lavish lifestyles of politicians,” he said.
He cited estimates suggesting that nearly ₦1 trillion was spent on luxury utility vehicles, presidential fleet upgrades and State House renovations. He also claimed that 33 state governments spent more than ₦410 billion on governors’ offices and executive travel within six months in 2026.
The SDP candidate further criticised high-value government procurements, including contracts exceeding ₦10 billion for armoured vehicles, arguing that public resources should be directed towards improving citizens’ welfare.
He said four years would be sufficient for a transparent administration to reform public finances and eliminate what he described as unconstitutional vehicle allowances.
Adebayo urged Nigerians to reject leaders who treated public funds as personal resources and reaffirmed his party’s commitment to public welfare and domestic production.
