The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ogun State Branch, has presented a 10-point healthcare agenda for the incoming state government in 2027, urging political parties and governorship candidates to prioritise healthcare delivery.
The association’s chairman, Dr Sunday Enimola, made the call on Monday in Abeokuta at a news conference marking the 2026 Physicians’ Week.
Enimola said healthcare should be treated as an investment in the state’s security, productivity and prosperity. He urged political candidates to present clear, measurable and adequately funded healthcare plans.
The agenda covers sustainable healthcare financing, improved welfare and safety of medical professionals, functional hospitals, stronger primary healthcare, expanded health insurance, digital health, medical research, emergency preparedness and structured engagement between government and healthcare professionals.
Enimola called for increased healthcare funding, noting that Ogun’s reported 13 per cent budgetary allocation between 2025 and 2026 could be raised to meet or exceed the 15 per cent benchmark referenced by the association.
He also urged the incoming administration to address staffing shortages, improve remuneration and working conditions, and introduce measures to attract and retain healthcare professionals, particularly in underserved communities.
The NMA chairman called for stronger public-private partnerships, transparent budgeting and improved access to essential medicines, equipment and medical services.
As part of the Physicians’ Week activities, he encouraged residents to undergo regular medical check-ups, embrace preventive healthcare and follow professional medical advice.
The week-long celebration will feature a cancer awareness walk, visits to medical elders, thanksgiving and Jumat services, among other activities.
