Ethnic groups in Niger State have showcased their cultural heritage at the second edition of ‘Rep Your Tribe’, an event aimed at promoting diversity, unity and peaceful coexistence.
The event, attended by the wife of the Niger State Governor, Hajiya Fatima Bago, brought together participants from different ethnic backgrounds to celebrate their traditions, customs and identities.
The cultural exhibition featured the Nupe, Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo, Kanuri and Kambari, among other ethnic groups. Participants entertained the audience with traditional music, colourful attire, dances and performances highlighting their cultural heritage.
The Vice-Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area and organiser of the event, Hajiya Safiya Nasidi, said the initiative provided an opportunity to celebrate cultural heritage, strengthen community relationships and help young people discover and develop their talents.
Nasidi described cultural heritage as one of society’s greatest treasures, noting that indigenous languages, traditional music, dances, clothing, values and customs preserve the stories of ancestors and reinforce people’s identities.
She said these traditions deserved to be celebrated, protected and passed on to future generations, stressing the importance of appreciating cultural differences in a diverse society.
“Being proud of your tribe does not mean looking down on another. Rather, it means understanding your roots while respecting the roots of others,” she said.
Nasidi encouraged artistes and other participants to use the event to showcase their talents, represent their cultures with pride and promote positive messages.
She added that the talents displayed could create opportunities for young people beyond the stage and contribute to a brighter future.
The presence of the governor’s wife highlighted the importance of preserving indigenous traditions and promoting appreciation of Niger State’s diverse cultural heritage.
The event also provided an opportunity for young people to learn about their roots while appreciating the customs and traditions of other communities.
Participants demonstrated through their performances that cultural diversity could foster mutual understanding, respect and peaceful coexistence.
Awards and cash rewards were also presented to recognise participants’ efforts and encourage them to continue developing and showcasing their cultural talents.
The second edition of Rep Your Tribe reaffirmed the importance of preserving cultural heritage, nurturing youth talent and promoting unity among Niger State’s diverse ethnic groups.
