Residents of Bauchi are heaving a sigh of relief as prices of grains have reportedly crashed in Bauchi markets following the harvest of new crops in the state.

A market survey conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) across markets in Bauchi on Thursday showed a decline in the prices of major grains over the past week.

NAN reports that a measure of rice, which was previously sold for N1, 800 now sells for N1, 400, while a 100kg bag of unpeeled rice sells for N40, 000.

Maize is sold for N450 per measure, compared to the former price of N550, while a 100kg bag now sells for N35, 000, against N45, 000.

Millet is currently selling at N1, 400 per measure, as against the former price of N1, 700, while guinea corn sells for N600 per measure, against the previous price of N700.

The cost of Bambara nuts remains at N1, 300 per measure, as the new harvest is yet to reach the market.

Groundnut is selling at N1, 400 per measure, while a 100kg bag now costs N130, 000, compared to the previous price of N160, 000.

A measure of Beans is sold for N1, 200, as against N1, 500 previously sold, while a 100kg bag, which was previously sold at N110, 000 now costs N90,000.

Mr Aminu Mohammed, a grains seller at Yelwa Market, attributed the decline in prices to the bountiful harvest recorded during the rainy season.

Mohammed also said a measure of soya beans remained at N1,200 because the new harvest was preferred by consumers due to its richness in milk production.

Another seller at Wunti Market, Mr Danbajari Ayuba, said he was enjoying increased patronage due to higher demand for grains following the fall in prices.

Similarly, Mrs Maimuna Salisu, a buyer, said prices of grains were relatively low during the harvest period, adding that she was taking advantage of the situation to buy and store for her family’s consumption.
