Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an environment where legitimate businesses can thrive and investments grow.
Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance in a statement by the state Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Mrs Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, on Wednesday in Lagos.
The governor made the remarks while congratulating the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) on its 72nd anniversary.
He described the milestone as remarkable, noting that ANLCA, established in 1954, had remained a critical part of Nigeria’s customs and maritime ecosystem.
“Seventy-two years is a remarkable milestone. ANLCA was established in 1954, six years before Nigeria became independent.
“Since then, the country has changed in many ways, and the business of trade has changed with it; yet, ANLCA has remained an important part of our customs and maritime ecosystem,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised the role of licensed customs agents in facilitating trade, protecting government revenue and boosting trader confidence.
He said Lagos’ expanding maritime infrastructure, including the Lekki Deep Sea Port, would create opportunities for the state to handle more trade and connect Nigerian businesses to a larger African market.
“That future will require all of us to work differently and work together,” he said.
The governor welcomed efforts by ANLCA and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to address congestion on the Apapa and Tin Can Island corridors.
He said port traffic was not merely a transport issue, as it increased business costs, delayed the movement of goods and affected the quality of life of Lagos residents.
Sanwo-Olu also commended ANLCA for its empowerment programmes and commitment to its members.
He urged the association to uphold integrity and equip its members, particularly younger ones, to operate effectively in an increasingly digital trading environment.
“Integrity must remain at the heart of your profession.
“The industry is also changing rapidly and your members, especially the younger ones, must be equipped to operate confidently in an increasingly digital trading environment,” he said.
The governor called for stronger collaboration among the Nigeria Customs Service, NPA, government agencies, the business community and licensed customs agents.
“When one part of that system is weak, everybody feels the impact,” he said.
He reiterated the state government’s support for policies promoting ease of doing business, investment growth and economic confidence.
