The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old woman in Ijebu-Igbo.
The command’s Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Opeyemi Oluborode, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abeokuta.
Oluborode said the incident occurred on Aug. 30 at the victim’s residence in Odo-Idi Sale, Oke Sopen, Ijebu-Igbo.
He said the suspect was arrested after the victim’s mother lodged a formal complaint at the Ijebu-Igbo Police Division on Tuesday at about 10:10 a.m.
According to him, police operatives visited and secured the scene, while the victim was taken to the General Hospital for medical examination and care.
Oluborode said one of the suspects, identified as Ayomide Kamula, was subsequently arrested, while his alleged accomplice, Boye Balogun, remained at large.
He said Kamula was in police custody undergoing interrogation, while intelligence-led efforts had been intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, condemned the alleged incident and reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual and gender-based violence.
He assured the victim’s family and the public that the command would conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable faced the law.
Ojajuni urged residents with credible information that could assist in apprehending the fleeing suspect to contact the command.
