Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is celebrating his 76th birthday on Thursday, marking his birth on Sept. 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, Gujarat.
Modi earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Delhi in 1978 and later obtained a master’s degree in the same subject from Gujarat University.
He began his political career with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1985. He served as BJP General Secretary from 1998 to 2001 and later became Gujarat Chief Minister, a position he held from 2001 to 2014.
During his tenure in Gujarat, the state attracted foreign investment, developed infrastructure and international ties, while most settlements were electrified.
Modi has served as India’s Prime Minister since 2014, leading initiatives such as Make in India and Digital India. According to TV BRICS, foreign investment in India rose from 25 billion dollars in 2014 to 45 billion dollars in the 2018-2019 financial year.
Beyond politics, Modi has authored journalistic and literary works on socio-political and religious issues.
India, a founding member of BRICS, hosted the group’s 18th summit in New Delhi from Sept. 12 to 13, ahead of Modi’s birthday. During the summit, he held bilateral meetings with leaders of member countries.
Modi said BRICS countries had agreed to establish an integrated system for responding to infectious disease outbreaks, a network of BRICS incubators and a start-up fund. He also highlighted the BRICS Connect initiative to boost employment.
