The Chairman of Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, Dr Alimot Adetoro, has inaugurated three newly constructed roads equipped with drainage systems and solar-powered street lights.
Adetoro inaugurated the projects on Monday during the first day of a four-day special series marking her first year in office.
The roads are Ogunyemi Road in Itedo, Ibrahim Atere Road in Gbara and Engr. Murphy Adetoro Road in Igbo-Efon, all in the Lekki area.
The chairman said the 1.5-kilometre roads were constructed with standard materials to improve mobility, enhance access, upgrade drainage systems and boost commercial activities within the communities.
She added that the infrastructure would support local businesses, improve property values and enhance the quality of life of residents in Itedo, Gbara and Igbo-Efon.
Adetoro said the projects were driven by the council’s HEYIGA agenda, which focuses on holistic development, empowerment, infrastructure, grassroots governance and accountability.
“Exactly a year ago when we assumed office, we promised that infrastructural development would be paramount in the agenda of our administration.
“Roads are not just pathways; they are lifelines of commerce, access to healthcare, education and community development.
“What we are witnessing today is a fulfilment of that promise. I want to assure you that this is just the beginning of more good things to happen.
“It is now my honour to officially commission these roads for public use, to the glory of God and for the benefit of the people of Eti-Osa,” she said.
Adetoro said the administration would continue to deliver more dividends of democracy through road construction, schools, primary healthcare centres and empowerment programmes.
She expressed optimism that the council would become an economic hub and a model for grassroots development.
In his remarks, the Leader of the Legislative Arm, Mr Sadiq Olayinka, said the roads would promote development and improve the lives of residents in the benefiting communities.
Olayinka acknowledged the infrastructure deficit in Eti-Osa, noting that the chairman had taken steps to address some of the challenges.
He said the legislative arm would perform its oversight functions to ensure the proper maintenance of the facilities.
Also speaking, the immediate past chairman, Mr Saheed Bankole, said the completed roads would bring relief to residents of the affected communities.
Bankole urged Community Development Associations (CDAs) to take ownership of the infrastructure and ensure proper maintenance of the drainage systems and solar-powered street lights.
“The CDAs need to take ownership of these roads and other infrastructure because the more they maintain them, the longer they will last for the communities.
“If the drainage systems are left uncleaned, they will become blocked and will no longer serve the purpose for which they were constructed,” he said.
The council’s Supervisor for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Sulaimon Adekambi, said the completed roads fulfilled a campaign promise made by the chairman.
Adekambi commended the benefiting communities for their support during the construction of the projects.
Party leaders, the Vice Chairman, Council Manager, members of the executive and legislative arms, supervisors, special advisers and assistants, market leaders and CDA representatives attended the ceremony.
