The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA) chapter, has warned that the ongoing strike could persist until December next year if the government fails to address the union’s demands.
Speaking on Crest FM on Wednesday, the AAUA-ASUU chairman said the government had yet to resolve the issues raised by the union or commence meaningful negotiations.
He maintained that ASUU would not suspend the industrial action until its outstanding demands were fully implemented.
“The strike has just started. We are prepared to stay out until our demands are met. If nothing is done, this can continue until December next year,” he said.
The warning comes amid growing concerns among students and parents over the impact of the strike on the university’s academic calendar.
The situation could worsen if the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) joins the industrial action.
There are indications that the union may also embark on a strike, a development that could further disrupt administrative and other non-teaching operations at AAUA.
ASUU’s grievances include demands for improved funding for public universities, payment of outstanding allowances and the implementation of previous agreements reached with the government.
The latest warning has raised fresh concerns over the possibility of prolonged disruption across the university system if no agreement is reached.
As of press time, there was no official response from the government or AAUA management regarding the chairman’s latest comments.
