… escapes from police again after claiming he wanted to ‘ease himself’
A receptionist, who allegedly disappeared with his employer’s N1.6m in Abuja, Nana Suleiman, on Friday appeared before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Life Camp, in the city, over an alleged breach of trust.
Suleiman, a receptionist at Duke Diamond Apartments, Wuye, Abuja, is facing a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Ms Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainant, Mr Adams Isaac, reported the matter at Wuye Police Command in January 2024.
Nwachukwu alleged that the defendant converted N1.6 million belonging to the complainant to his personal use.
She said the defendant absconded to an unknown destination but was later arrested in Lagos State on April 30.
The prosecutor told the court that on May 1, the defendant escaped from police custody at Zuba while being transported from Lagos to Abuja.
She alleged that the defendant pretended to ease himself before fleeing from the police officer escorting him.
Nwachukwu said the defendant was eventually found and arrested in Maiduguri, Borno State, and brought back to the Federal Capital Territory.
The prosecutor said the defendant made a confessional statement during police investigations, admitting to the alleged offence.
According to her, the offences contravened Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Musa Jobbo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Jobbo ordered that the sureties must be either public or private-sector workers and must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
He adjourned the case until Sept. 1 for hearing.
