A seven-month pregnant housewife, Safiya Ismail, has asked an Upper Area Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, to grant her divorce from her husband, Suleiman Khalid, over alleged assault.
The petitioner, who has one child, told the court that she married Khalid under Islamic law.
“My husband has abandoned his family and is no longer responsible.
“He beats me and threatens to harm me.
“He has failed in his duties as a father and husband,” she said.
Ismail also asked the court to order her husband to provide money for her upkeep until she gives birth.
Khalid denied the allegations.
The judge, Malam Mohammed Shomo, adjourned the matter until August 26 for hearing.
