Lionel Messi delivered a masterclass in his first start back for Inter Miami, scoring twice and grabbing an assist to lead his side to a 4-2 victory over Mexican side Atlético de San Luis in their Leagues Cup opener.

Making his first starting appearance since returning from international duty, the Argentine icon dominated the first half to turn an early deficit into a comfortable win for Miami.

The Mexican visitors took a surprise early lead when David Rodríguez headed home from close range.

Then Miami responded quickly when Noah Allen whipped in a low cross, allowing Messi to turn it in with a clean first-time finish.

In the 26th minutes Messi was involved again as Telasco Segovia put Miami ahead 2-1 after combining in attack.

Just before the break, Messi worked space inside the box and slotted home his second of the night.

Defender Micael headed in Miami’s fourth before half-time to cap off a dominant four-goal opening period.

With his two goals, Messi officially became the all-time leading goalscorer in Leagues Cup history.
