A 36-year-old man, Kareem Olatunde, on Monday appeared before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court sitting in Isabo for allegedly obtaining N600,000 by false pretence.
Olatunde, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretence and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, ASP Ojo Adewusi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 3 at Lafenwa Market, Abeokuta.
Adewusi alleged that Olatunde obtained N600,000 from the complainant, Mr Abbas Wasiu, a trader, under the guise of investing the money.
He said Olatunde claimed to be a marketer for a Chinese importation company, Tian Yuan, and persuaded the complainant to invest with the company.
According to the prosecutor, after receiving the money, Olatunde allegedly continued to give excuses when Wasiu requested a refund and later blocked communication with him.
The offences, according to the prosecution, contravene Sections 383, 390 and 419 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun 2006.
The Magistrate, Mrs R.A. Lawal, granted Olatunde bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties who must be registered bondsmen with the Ogun State Judiciary.
Lawal ordered that he be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending the perfection of his bail conditions.
She adjourned the case until September 11 for hearing.
