A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a driver, Edward Isaac, to two years’ imprisonment for stealing cartons of floor tiles worth N880,000.
The Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced Isaac after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and stealing.
Delivering judgment, Emmanuel said the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt and condemned the convict’s betrayal of trust.
The court held that such acts undermined workplace discipline and accountability.
Emmanuel consequently sentenced Isaac to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour and without an option of fine.
He said the punishment would serve as a deterrent to others.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that the complainant, Mr David Silas of D&C Construction Firm, Barnawa, Kaduna, reported the matter at a police station on Aug. 12.
Leo said Silas reported the theft after a worker informed him that Isaac and another person, who is still at large, were seen loading 40 cartons of floor tiles into a truck without authorisation.
He said Isaac was immediately arrested, while his accomplice escaped.
According to the prosecutor, Isaac confessed during investigation that he planned to sell the stolen tiles to one Dauda Bege.
The offences contravene the provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
