Atletico Madrid have officially opened negotiations to sign Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, with the defender widely expected to leave North London this summer.

Diego Simeone has made the 28-year-old Argentina international a primary target to bolster his backline, and personal terms between the player and Atletico are not expected to be an issue.

Romero is a long-term target for Simeone, and Atletico are pressing hard to close a deal.

Inter Milan are also monitoring the defender following his World Cup campaign with Argentina.

Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi made it clear he won’t stand in the way of any player who wants to seek a fresh challenge.

While Romero looks set to depart, Tottenham are closing in on a boost in defense, with partner Micky van de Ven near an agreement on a new five-year contract to stay at the club.
