The organiser of Akwaaba African Travel Market, Ikechi Uko, says this year’s edition will spotlight young culinary talents through its flagship Jollof Rice War competition.
Uko told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview on Friday that winners of the Lagos Boy Child Initiative (LBCI) Boys Cooking Competition, held on Aug. 3, will compete at the event.
Uko said the boys’ confidence, discipline and enthusiasm stood out during the LBCI Boys Cooking Competition.
“They were not simply cooking. They demonstrated teamwork, creativity and confidence.
“Those qualities convinced us they deserved a bigger continental platform,” he said.
He said the Jollof Rice War aligned with Akwaaba’s vision of promoting African gastronomy and cultural tourism, using food to tell Africa’s stories and connect destinations through shared culinary heritage.
“It was important to bring these boys because Akwaaba creates opportunities beyond winning.
“They will meet chefs, tourism professionals, exhibitors and potential mentors from across Africa,” he said.
Uko said participation in the competition could inspire careers in hospitality, food entrepreneurship, culinary education and destination marketing, while helping the boys build valuable professional networks.
He added that this year’s Jollof Rice War would feature richer cultural displays, destination showcases and culinary exchanges aimed at promoting African destinations ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He added that Akwaaba will promote partnerships between African tour operators and destinations.
According to him, the event will leverage food, culture, and hospitality to drive intra-African travel and tourism ahead of AFCON 2027 in three host nations.
