The Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange (WSICE) continued its remarkable 17th edition on Thursday with a vibrant and inspiring Ondo State programme, bringing together hundreds of students, educators, government representatives and cultural stakeholders in a celebration that moved beyond the marking of Professor Wole Soyinka’s 92nd birthday to a deeper engagement with the values he has championed throughout his life.
The event featured the presentation of awards to the Top 10 finalists of the Ondo State Essay Competition. Prizes were presented to the first, second and third place winners, while finalists placed fourth through tenth were equally recognised for their outstanding intellectual contributions and commitment to excellence.
The ceremony was attended by the representative of the Governor of Ondo State, alongside distinguished guests from government, education, culture and the creative sector, all of whom commended the initiative for nurturing critical thinking, creativity and responsible citizenship among young Nigerians.
One of the highlights of the day was the colourful participation of five schools, whose performances transformed the venue into a living expression of Nigeria’s cultural richness. Through traditional dance, ewi (Yoruba poetic recital), spoken word and other artistic presentations, the students demonstrated not only remarkable talent but also a profound appreciation of their cultural heritage.
Every visual element inside the hall spoke the language of cultural continuity. The emblems of the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange stood alongside those of the Ondo State Government and the WS@92 identity, symbolising a partnership between public leadership and cultural stewardship. The venue itself became more than an event space—it became a classroom where heritage, governance and education converged.
Beyond the performances and awards, the programme created an atmosphere where young people connected across intellectual, cultural and social boundaries. In his Goodwill Message, the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, congratulated Professor Soyinka on his 92nd birthday, describing him as a literary titan,
distinguished patriot, revered statesman, cultural giant and fearless defender of truth and justice.
“Today, we celebrate not merely the 92nd birthday of a colossus, but the enduring legacy of an institution whose life has enriched humanity and elevated the stature of Africa before the world. As Professor Oluwole Akinwande Soyinka turns 92, I join millions of admirers across the globe in honouring a literary titan, moral compass and fearless defender of truth and justice,” he stated.
Speaking on the significance of this year’s edition, the organisers noted that the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange continues to grow in both reach and impact.
Having successfully connected communities across Nigeria and the United Kingdom through programmes in Ogun State and London, including intergenerational conversations, mentorship sessions, cultural advocacy and theatrical performances featuring Esther’s Revenge, the return to Ondo State further demonstrates WSICE’s commitment to taking meaningful cultural engagement directly to young people in their communities.
More importantly, the Exchange continues to translate Professor Wole Soyinka’s lifelong philosophy into practical engagement with the next generation. It challenges young people to think independently, speak truth without fear, question injustice, defend intellectual freedom and embrace culture as a living force capable of shaping society.
The success of the Ondo State programme once again reflects the growing influence of WSICE as one of Africa’s foremost platforms for cultural dialogue, youth mentorship and intellectual exchange.

The 2026 edition of the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange was coordinated by Producer Linda Amadi-Olowookere, under the leadership of Executive Producer, Dr. Olateju Kareem, supported by a dedicated team of scholars, cultural practitioners and volunteers committed to ensuring that Professor Wole Soyinka’s enduring ideals continue to inspire new generations across borders.

Only days after concluding highly successful programmes in Abeokuta and London—including Professor Wole Soyinka’s intergenerational dialogue, youth mentoring, advocacy sessions on Culture Beyond Borders, and the acclaimed production of Esther’s Revenge—the Exchange returned to Ondo State, once again placing young people at the centre of national cultural discourse.
This movement across continents demonstrates that the Exchange is no longer merely an annual celebration. It has become a living institution connecting African heritage, scholarship, creativity and civic responsibility across generations and across borders.
As Professor Wole Soyinka enters his ninety-third year, the greatest tribute may not be the ceremonies held in his honour, but the courage awakened in the minds of young people inspired by his example.

The Commissioner’s address echoed the very philosophy upon which the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange was founded. Rather than merely celebrating achievement, he challenged the finalists and the hundreds of students present to cultivate independent thought, moral courage and academic excellence, reminding them that education finds its highest purpose when it produces citizens capable of questioning injustice and contributing meaningfully to society.
