Ronald Koeman has resigned as head coach of the Netherlands national team following the country’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Dutch side crashed out in the Round of 32 after losing to Morocco on penalties, ending a disappointing campaign.
Announcing his decision on Instagram, Koeman said he was taking responsibility for the team’s failure to achieve its World Cup ambitions.
According to him, stepping down was not an easy decision, given the close relationship he had built with his coaching staff and players during his time in charge.
Koeman thanked everyone involved with the national team for their dedication and support, adding that he now intends to spend more time with his family.
The 63-year-old was serving his second spell as Netherlands coach after returning to the role following the departure of Louis van Gaal after the 2022 World Cup.
During his second stint, Koeman guided the Netherlands to the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2024, marking the country’s best performance at a major international tournament since the 2014 World Cup.
His contract was due to expire after the 2026 World Cup, but he chose not to extend his stay following the team’s early exit.
