Two people have died from suffocation during World Cup celebrations in Mexico City after thousands of football fans gathered to celebrate the country’s victory over Ecuador.
The incident occurred on Hamburgo and Lancaster streets near the Angel of Independence monument, where large crowds assembled following Mexico’s 2-0 win over Ecuador in the Round of 32.
According to the city’s health authorities, the victims were a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman.
The health secretariat said both individuals received advanced resuscitation efforts, but were later confirmed dead due to suffocation.
Authorities have not yet provided further details on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
