Two bankers arraigned for allegedly stealing N5.7 million

Two employees of Excel Microfinance Bank were arraigned on Thursday in a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N5.7m.

The defendants, both residents of Goni-gora, Kaduna, were charged with conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on June 26, at Sabon Tasha, Kaduna.

Leo alleged that the defendants, who were staff of the bank, stole N5.7m belonging to the bank.

He said the defendants were arrested when the theft was uncovered during an auditing of the bank’s accounts on July 2.

The prosecutor said that during police investigations the defendants confessed to have committed the crime.

Leo said that the offences contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with one surety each in like sum.

Emmanuel said that each surety should be a blood relation of the defendants.

He said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must present evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.

The magistrate adjourned the case until Aug. 5, for  hearing.
