A 24-year-old tailor, Yakubu Kabiru, was on Wednesday arraigned before a Life Camp Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for allegedly stealing his employer’s industrial sewing machine.
Kabiru, a resident of Jabi Upstairs, Abuja, is facing charges of housebreaking and theft.
The defendant, however, partially denied the charges.
The prosecutor, Bankole Babatunde, told the court that the complainant, Mr Mohammed Jibrin, of Life Camp, Abuja, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station on July 4.
Babatunde said Kabiru was a former casual staff member at the complainant’s tailoring shop located in Angwan Beri-Beri village, Life Camp, Abuja.
He told the court that on May 29, the defendant allegedly broke into the shop and carted away an Emel industrial sewing machine and customers’ fabrics valued at N1.2 million.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant made a confessional statement during police investigation, admitting to stealing the machine but denying involvement in the theft of the fabrics.
Babatunde said efforts to recover the machine had so far been unsuccessful.
He added that the alleged offences contravened Sections 346 and 288 of the Penal Code.
The presiding magistrate, Hauwa Aboki, directed that the bail application be filed formally before the court.
The case was adjourned until Aug. 13 for hearing.
