The Chairman of the Enugu State Football Association, Tony Ugwu, has described Spain’s victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final as a reward for the team’s resilience and coordination.
Ugwu, a former Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Council, stated this on Monday in Nsukka while reacting to Spain’s triumph in the final played at the New York/New Jersey Stadium.
He noted that both teams displayed quality football throughout the encounter, which extended into extra time after ending level at the end of regulation time. Ferran Torres eventually scored the winning goal in the 106th minute to secure the title for Spain.
“Everybody who watched the final knows that Argentina and Spain gave a good account of themselves, but Spain was more resilient and coordinated to lift the coveted trophy.
“The victory sparked massive celebrations among Spanish supporters at the New York/New Jersey Stadium because of the tension and excitement the match generated,” he said.
Ugwu also commended the performances of African teams at the tournament, particularly Morocco, which reached the quarter-finals.
He, however, expressed disappointment that the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the competition.
The football administrator urged the Federal Government and other stakeholders to begin preparations early and provide the necessary support needed to ensure Nigeria qualifies for the next FIFA World Cup.
According to him, with adequate planning, investment and commitment, the Super Eagles can challenge for the title and become the first African country to win the FIFA World Cup.
