The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, has urged employers of corps members in Anambra State to prioritise their welfare and provide mentorship to enhance their service experience.
Nafiu made the call on Tuesday at the 2026 Corps Employers’ Workshop held in Awka.
The workshop, themed “Fine-tuning Stakeholders’ Collaboration to Enhance Corps Members’ Welfare and Workplace Experience,” brought together stakeholders to discuss ways of improving the welfare and workplace conditions of corps members.
Represented by Mrs Victoria Ike-Nwosu, Deputy Director of NYSC South-East Area Office I, Enugu, the Director-General commended employers for their continued support for the objectives and ideals of the scheme.
He said the workshop provided an opportunity for stakeholders to assess their collective efforts, strengthen existing partnerships and explore new strategies for improving the welfare and workplace experience of corps members posted to various organisations.
According to him, employers play a vital role in creating a conducive environment for productive and rewarding national service.
“Corps employers play important roles in creating conducive environment for productive and eventful service.
“The workplace serves as the primary platform through which corps members acquire practical experience, develop professional competencies and contribute their skills to national development,” he said.
Speaking at the event, the Anambra State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr Patrick-Agha Mba, praised the NYSC Director-General and the state coordinator for their leadership and commitment to youth development.
Mba said the NYSC had continued to promote national unity, cultural integration, leadership development and community service while equipping young graduates with practical workplace experience needed for the labour market.
He noted that the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo had transformed Anambra into one of Nigeria’s leading destinations for investment and private sector growth through improvements in infrastructure, security, digital development and regulatory reforms.
“Today, Anambra is witnessing significant improvements in road infrastructure, urban renewal, security, digital infrastructure, ease of doing business, revenue administration and regulatory reforms.
“These interventions are creating an enabling environment that reduces the cost of doing business, enhances productivity and gives businesses the confidence to expand their operations within the state.
“As Chairman of the NYSC State Governing Board, I reaffirm the unwavering commitment of the Anambra Government to sustaining conducive collaboration for both corps members and employers,” he said.
In her welcome address, the NYSC Coordinator in Anambra, Mrs Pauline Ojisua, said the welfare and development of corps members required the collective efforts of all stakeholders.
She commended employers for giving corps members opportunities to learn, serve and develop professionally.
“Beyond assigning duties, many of you have mentored them, encouraged them and helped them discover their strengths,” she said.
