A 24-year-old man, Femi Afolabi, has been remanded at the Oba Correctional Centre after appearing before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court over the alleged burglary of a convenience store and theft of valuables worth N794,000.
Afolabi, whose address was not disclosed, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of burglary and stealing.
The prosecutor, ASP Ojo Adewusi, told the court that the defendant allegedly broke into the complainant’s shop at Ijana Alapako Village, Owode-Egba, Abeokuta, around midnight on March 3 with the intent to commit a felony.
He alleged that Afolabi stole N489,000 in cash, a Tiger generator valued at N100,000, an Itel A100 mobile phone worth N115,000, a power bank valued at N20,000, a phone charger worth N13,000, a 3kg gas cylinder valued at N17,000, 20 pieces of Premier soap worth N20,000 and food items valued at N20,000.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant also damaged seven padlocks worth N14,000 and two windows valued at N15,000, bringing the total value of the damaged property to N29,000.
Adewusi said vigilante operatives arrested the suspect and handed him over to the police.
He added that the offences contravened Sections 383, 390(9) and 451 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Magistrate R.A. Lawal granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.
The court ruled that the surety must be a registered bondsman with the Ogun State Judiciary.
Lawal, however, ordered that Afolabi be remanded at the Oba Correctional Centre pending the perfection of his bail conditions and adjourned the case until Aug. 14 for hearing.
