Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has inaugurated a Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and signed an Executive Order aimed at tackling thuggery and related crimes in the state.
Yusuf described drug abuse as a major threat to young people, saying it contributes to violent crime, family breakdown and social instability.
He said the task force would coordinate intelligence gathering, enforcement, public awareness, rehabilitation and collaboration with security agencies and other stakeholders.
The governor pledged funding, logistics, operational support and independence for the task force to effectively carry out its mandate. He also said the state would continue expanding rehabilitation services for victims of drug abuse.
According to Yusuf, the Executive Order will strengthen efforts to dismantle criminal gangs, curb political violence and support security agencies in maintaining law and order.
Task force Chairman, Muhuyi Rimingado, pledged to work with security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, civil society groups and communities to combat drug abuse and improve public safety across the state.
