San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones has called for the cancellation of Kanye West’s scheduled July 4 concert at the Alamodome, citing the rapper’s history of antisemitic remarks and hate speech.
In a post on X, Jones said the city should not host West at a publicly funded venue, especially on Independence Day, which coincides with the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations.
“Military City USA should not host someone with a record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-funded facility like our Alamodome—not ever, and certainly not on July 4th,” she wrote.
The mayor added that opposing antisemitism is essential to building a stronger and more united society.
West’s planned performance has sparked renewed criticism over his past controversial statements and actions, including releasing a song titled “Heil Hitler” and promoting merchandise featuring a swastika.
The backlash mirrors developments in Europe, where several events involving the rapper have been cancelled. The United Kingdom barred him from entering the country, leading to the cancellation of his appearance at London’s Wireless Festival. Authorities said his presence was “not conducive to the public good.”
Swiss football club FC Basel also scrapped a planned June concert, stating that hosting West would not align with the organisation’s values. Similarly, a venue in Chorzów, Poland, cancelled a scheduled performance, citing formal and legal reasons.
The San Antonio concert remains under scrutiny as calls for its cancellation continue to grow.
