General overseer of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor Williams Kumuyi, has reminded Christians that Apostle Peter did not hand the church over to his son.
He said this as he ruled out handing the Deeper Life to any of his own offspring.
“Peter did not hand over the church to his son. Paul did not have any son or wife, but Paul did not hand over the church to his son. And John did not hand over the church to his son,” he said.
The 85-year-old cleric spoke on the growing speculation regarding who would eventually succeed him at the helm of the ministry during a recent church service.
Kumuyi revealed that some members had questioned whether he might eventually transfer leadership to one of his sons.
He dismissed such notions outright, stating that the church belongs to Jesus Christ and must never be treated as a family inheritance.
“Many people were speculating, is he going to hand over the church unto his son? Won’t he search for his first son, second son, where are they? Where do they live? Is he not going to hand over the church?” Kumuyi said.
The cleric, however, rejected the suggestion, emphasising that the ministry is not his personal property.
“Well, it’s not his church. And because it’s not his church, Jesus said, upon this rock, I will build my church… It’s the church of the Lord Jesus Christ and nobody has right to hand it over to his son,” he said.
Kumuyi met Abiodun Olowu in September 1972 and they married on September 13, 1980 in Lagos, and had two children, Jeremiah and John.
Abiodun died on April 11, 2009.
