Africa has scored another minus one at the ongoing World Cup as Norway on Tuesday defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash, booking a place in the last 16.
It happened a day after Morocco triumphed over Netherlands though South Africa have also exited the tournament.
Norway and Ivory Coast teams showed attacking intent in a closely contested knockout encounter.
Norway started strongly and took the lead in the 39th minute through Antonio Nusa’s composed finish.
Nusa converted after receiving a precise pass from captain Martin Odegaard, giving Norway the advantage before half-time.
Ivory Coast responded after the break and increased pressure as they searched for an equaliser.
Their efforts succeeded in the 74th minute when Amad Diallo levelled the score after Nicolas Pepe’s assist.
Diallo’s goal revived Ivorian hopes as the Elephants pushed forward looking for a comeback victory.
Norway regained control late on and found the winner through Erling Haaland in the 86th minute.
Haaland finished clinically after Patrick Berg’s pass to restore Norway’s lead and settle the match.
Ivory Coast continued attacking but Norway defended firmly to secure progression into the next round.
Norway captain, Martin Odegaard, praised the team’s determination, saying, “We stayed focused and fought until the final whistle.”
The victory highlighted Norway’s ability to handle pressure, while Ivory Coast exited after a spirited performance.
