Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has retired from international football following Germany’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup after a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay.
Speaking after the loss, Neuer described the manner of Germany’s exit as disappointing.
“It’s extremely bitter for it to end like this,” he said.
The veteran goalkeeper, whose professional career has spanned more than two decades, began his senior career with FC Schalke 04 before joining FC Bayern Munich in 2011.
Neuer had initially retired from international football after UEFA Euro 2024 but reversed his decision to represent Germany at the World Cup. The tournament has now marked the end of his international career.
Germany were knocked out of the competition after losing 4-3 on penalties to Paraguay following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
The match was Neuer’s 128th appearance for Germany, placing him among the country’s most-capped players. He trails Lukas Podolski (130 caps), Thomas Müller (131 caps), Miroslav Klose (137 caps) and Lothar Matthäus (150 caps).
Paraguay will face the winner of the World Cup Round of 32 clash between France and Sweden in the next round.
