Frank Onyeka has completed a permanent move to Coventry City F.C. from Brentford F.C. for an undisclosed fee after a successful loan spell with the Sky Blues. The transfer becomes effective on July 1.
The Nigerian midfielder initially joined Coventry on loan in February, with the deal including an obligation to make the transfer permanent if the club secured promotion to the Premier League. That clause was triggered after Frank Lampard’s side won the Sky Bet Championship title and earned a return to the English top flight for the first time in 25 years.
Onyeka played a key role in the club’s title-winning campaign, making 14 league appearances, scoring one goal and providing one assist. His only goal came in a crucial 3-2 victory over Derby County in April.
The 28-year-old arrives with valuable Premier League experience, having made 75 league appearances and 87 appearances in all competitions during his time at Brentford. He joined the Bees from Danish club FC Midtjylland in 2021 and also spent the 2024/25 season on loan at FC Augsburg.
Brentford director of football Phil Giles praised Onyeka’s professionalism and commitment, saying the midfielder had been a loyal servant to the club and deserved the opportunity to play regular first-team football.
Speaking after completing the transfer, Onyeka said:
“I’m really excited for the new season with Coventry.
“When I first joined last season, I came here with two goals, and that was to win the Championship and help Coventry get promoted to the Premier League.
“I’m really happy to now be a Coventry player back in the Premier League.
“I will give everything to the team, fight for every ball, fight for my teammates and bring my experience.
“My ambition now is to help the Club stay in the Premier League and finish as high as we can.”
