The colourful Lagos Fanti Carnival has returned to the streets of Lagos Island, bringing bright costumes, lively music, and rich history to life at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS).
The celebration started on the 6th of April and will run throughout the day with dances, and cultural displays.
The carnival is one of the oldest cultural festivals in West Africa, rooted in the 19th‑century traditions brought home by Afro‑Brazilian returnees — known as the Aguda — who mixed Brazilian rhythms and heritage with local Lagos culture.
This year’s event — themed “A Homecoming of Heritage” — got bigger crowds and community participation than before.
Cultural groups from historic Lagos Island neighbourhoods are leading colourful parades, while music inspired by samba and local beats fuels the lively atmosphere.
Officials have also announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions around the carnival area to ensure a smooth and safe celebration for participants and spectators.
Motorists have been asked to adjust their travel plans where possible.
The carnival doesn’t just celebrate tradition,it is also a boost for the local tourism economy.
Lagos authorities expect lots of visitors in town today, helping small businesses, food vendors and creative performers benefit from the influx of people and interest.
As the sun sets on Lagos Island, thousands of fans and families will enjoy the vibrant spectacle that has become one of the city’s most anticipated cultural highlights — a day where past and present meet in colour, sound and community spirit.
