Women in Akwa Ibom have thrown their weight behind the re-election bid of President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office in 2027.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the women gave the endorsement during the visit by the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, to Uyo, the state capital.
NAN also reports that no fewer than 5,000 women were on hand to receive the first lady who was in the state to celebrate the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD).
While addressing the gathering, Sen. Tinubu described the theme for this year’s celebration: “Rights, Justice, Action for all Women and Girls,” as a call to action.
She said that protecting the rights of women and girls by ensuring access to education, economic empowerment, health, social protection and equity was an investment in the collective future of the country.
The first lady urged the people of the state to remain focused and united to protect the gains which the President Bola Tinubu’s administration had recorded.
“This year’s theme: “Rights, Justice, Action, for All Women and Girls,” is a call to action. Protecting the rights of women and girls by ensuring access to education, economic empowerment, health, social protection and equity is an investment in our collective future.
”I encourage every woman here to be a positive tool for change in your homes, businesses, communities and your state at large. When women lead with purpose, the entire nation feels the impact,” she said.
As part of the celebration, Mrs Tinubu inaugurated an ultra-modern Senior Citizens Centre named in her honour.
According to Mrs Tinubu, any society that honours its elderly is one that understands responsibility, gratitude and continuity.
“I also urge families and communities to continue to show love and support to their aging parents and relatives.
”Government can provide structures but society must provide warmth and care.,” she said, even as she urged other states to emulate the model.
NAN reports that the centre, which was conceptualised by the late wife of the state governor, Pastor Patience Eno, will provide access to healthcare, recreation and social support in one safe and dignified space.
Mrs Tinubu encouraged the people of the state to keep building on the legacies and good reforms being laid by the Tinubu administration.
“The reforms, already started by this administration, are designed to create a lasting legacy of transformation and prosperity for all Nigerians. We must protect the progress we have made and keep building on it,” she said.
In his remarks, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, commended the pivotal role of women in all spheres of life, especially in the stability of the home and, by extension, the society.
Also speaking, Gov. Umo Eno noted that the success of any society is largely dependent on women.
NAN reports that the high point of the celebration was the endorsement of the presiden and the governor for second term in office, while the Akpabio was also endorsed for another term at the senate.
The declaration of the endorsement was read by the state Deputy Governor, Sen. Akon Eyakenyi, alongside other prominent women in the state.
