Nigeria has lost an iconic entertainer following the passing of Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga — founder of the iconic Shuga Band, a mainstay of Lagos’ elite social circles.
In an official statement issued by the family, Tofowomo — celebrated musician, Grandmaster performer, and Managing Director of both Shuga Entertainment and the Shuga Limb Foundation — died in New Brunswick, Canada.
Beyond his mastery of live performance, Akiin Shuga earned a legacy as a cultural custodian whose music defined high-profile celebrations and ceremonies across Lagos and beyond. For over three decades, he graced stages with unmatched energy and leadership, inspiring generations of musicians and entertaining thousands with the band’s signature sound.
“To countless admirers at home and abroad, he was both an inspiration and an institution,” the family wrote in the statement, describing him as a “true king in his art.”
As they continue to process the profound loss, the family appealed for privacy and quiet reflection. They noted that details regarding memorial arrangements would be announced later.
The statement also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers, tributes, and goodwill messages received since his passing.
Akiin Shuga is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother.
