The police on Tuesday arraigned a 40-year-old man, Ola Abiodun, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly breaking into a shop and stealing mobile phones valued at N115,000.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on stealing and breach of the peace.
The prosecutor, Insp Elijah Adejare, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Nov. 6, at about 12.30 p.m. in the Stadium area of Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendant stole a Vivo Android phone valued at N100,000 belonging to Omodolapo Oluwasinayomi.
Adejare stated that the defendant also went to the shop of Ms Risi Ayoola and stole her itel phone valued at N15,000.
He stated that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by stealing mobile phones valued at N115,000, belonging to two different individuals.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 302 and 181(d) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and prepare his witnesses.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.
Counsel to the defendant, Mr Gbenga Ariyibi, urged the court to grant the defendant bail, assuring that he would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Kehinde Awosika, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum.
She adjourned the case until Dec.11 for hearing.
