The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo has called for purposeful governance, institutional discipline, and people‑centered development in the state.
Dr Tony Aziegbemi, state chairman of the party, made the call during a press conference to review the one‑year in office of Gov. Monday Okpebholo, on Thursday in Benin.
Aziegbemi called on the governor to build on the developmental foundation laid by the previous administration and refocus on policies that directly impact citizens’ welfare.
According to him, the past year presented an opportunity to sustain the progress made under the previous administration, particularly in digital governance, education reform, infrastructure renewal, and institutional accountability.
He, however, expressed concern over what he termed a “slow start” in policy implementation and governance structure.
“For months, the state operated without a functional cabinet, which affected policy direction and execution,” he said.
The PDP chairman said the party’s position was not to criticise for its own sake but to call attention to the urgent need for stability, transparency, and renewed focus on the people’s priorities.
He noted that key sectors such as land administration, education, and health require stronger oversight and continuity.
“The Edo Geographic Information Service (EdoGIS), which once brought transparency to land administration, has slowed down in performance.
“This has implications for investment flow and property rights,” he said.
On infrastructure, Aziegbemi called for accelerated maintenance of urban facilities, road rehabilitation, and sanitation management.
According to him, these are fundamental to a functional and thriving state capital.
He also appealed for the revitalisation of educational and health institutions, noting that Edo’s earlier gains in digital learning and school modernisation under the EdoBEST initiative should not be reversed.
Aziegbemi also highlighted the need for transparency in contract awards and public‑procurement processes, emphasising that due process is the foundation of credible governance.
He reaffirmed the PDP’s role as a constructive opposition committed to accountability and public interest.
Aziegbemi said that the party remains Edo’s only organised, policy‑driven, and people‑centered political platform.
He also referenced the legacy projects of the previous administration, including the Edo Tech Park, Ossiomo Power Plant, Edo Modular Refinery, EdoJobs Initiative, and the John Odigie‑Oyegun Public Service Academy.
He described the projects as models of strategic development that should be sustained and expanded.
Aziegbemi concluded by urging the Okpebholo‑led administration to build on Edo’s legacy of progress and innovation rather than abandon existing projects.
“Edo people deserve stability, focus, and continuity in governance.
“The first year should be a learning curve; the coming years must deliver measurable progress,” he said
