The Gombe State Police Command has successfully disrupted a transnational criminal enterprise. Operatives apprehended a 30-year-old suspect, who is alleged to be a member of a cross-border kidnapping syndicate.
DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the Command’s spokesman, announced the arrest at a news conference on Tuesday in Gombe. He confirmed that the detention occurred on October 4. The police acted on an intelligence report linking the suspect to a series of kidnappings for ransom.
These criminal activities spanned both Nigeria and the Republic of Cameroon. The success of the operation is seen as a significant victory against organized crime in the region.
Abdullahi said preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect hailed from Song Local Government Area of Adamawa, and residing at Jauro Jatau Quarters in Akko, Gombe State.
He said investigation showed the syndicate involved in several kidnapping operations, and their arms cache concealed in a mountainous area near Wuro Biriji village in Song.
“A follow up operations, on Sunday by the Command operatives to the said location, led to the recovery of the following exhibits,” he said.
Abdullahi said the police recovered two AK-47 Rifles; 80 rounds of live ammunition, seven AK-47 magazines, a chain, padlocks, knife and four small bags.
He said the command had intensified effort to nab fleeing members of the syndicate to dismantle its network.
Meanwhile, the police have detained three suspects over alleged criminal conspiracy, robbery and an attempt to commit culpable homicide.
