A 57-year-old man, Monsur Abdulsalam, has appeared before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday for alleged stealing and conversion of N9.2 million belonging to an Arabic school in Ibadan.
The defendant, a resident of Elekuro Area of Ibadan, was charged with a seven – count charge of conspiracy, fraudulent act, conversion, stealing, breaking, forgery and threat to life.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Police Prosecutor, ASP Femi Olanibi, told the court that the defendant allegedly conspired with others at large to commit the offence.
Olanibi alleged that the defendant, and others at large, committed the offences in 2021 at an Arabic Institute of Nigeria, Elekuro, Ibadan.
“He unlawfully broke into the office of one Dr Muhideen Abdulsalam, who oversees the school and made away with documents and personal effects belonging to him,” he said.
He alleged that Monsur, in 2016 at the same school, stole and unlawfully converted N2 million being proceeds of loan repayment from Internally Generated Revenue (IiGR) of the Institute, represented by Dr Muhideen Abdulsalam.
Olanibi also alleged that the defendant unlawfully sold a vehicle belonging to the school and converted N7.2 million, being proceeds from the sale of the bus to his own use.
“The defendant, in a manner likely to caused breach of peace, prevented Dr Muhideen Abdulsalam from entering the school premises by inciting hoodlums to harass, intimidate and chase him out of the school.
“Abdulsalam, a sibling of Dr Muhideen Abdulsalam who oversees the school built by their late father, and being sponsored by the Saudi Government, highjacked the school from him and took over the administration.
“The offence is contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Sections 390 (9), 249 (d),414 and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000,” the prosecutor said.
The Defence counsel, Mr. Olusola Suleiman, asked for the defendant’s bail in most liberal terms.
The Magistrate, Mrs T. G . Daodu, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N3 million with two sureties in like sum, one of whom must be his blood relation.
She, thereafter, adjourned the case untill Oct. 20 for hearing.
