The police, on Monday, charged a 49-year-old man, Adeniyi Ojo, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, over alleged stealing and breach of peace.
The defendant, whose address was not disclosed, is standing trial on a two-count charge of stealing and conduct likely to breach public peace.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Insp Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Oct. 18, at about 8:10 p.m. at Iremo street in Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendant stole cocoa valued N84,000, belonging to one Olubobokun Tayo.
The prosecutor also alleged that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of public peace, by duplicating a store key without the consent of the store owner.
He said that the offences contravene the provisions of sections 181(d) and 295 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and present his witnesses.
Meanwhile, defence counsel Mr Tolulope Bewaji, urged the court to grant the defendant bail on liberal terms, adding that he will not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Ajibade, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N40,000 with one surety in like sum.
She adjourned the case untill Nov. 10, for hearing
