The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has commended the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) for its role in sustaining stability in Nigeria’s education sector.
Oloyede gave the commendation at the ongoing National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of NASU on Thursday in Abuja.
He described NASU as a formidable partner in ensuring efficiency in the education system and safeguarding workers’ rights and welfare across institutions.
“Over the years, NASU has remained a strong partner in ensuring that our institutions operate smoothly and that the dignity of workers is upheld,” he said.
The JAMB registrar said NASU’s motto, “An injury to one is an injury to all,” exemplified the spirit of solidarity and collective responsibility that defines the union’s philosophy.
He urged the union to continue promoting fairness, productivity, and social justice in the workplace, stressing that workers’ welfare must remain central to national development.
Oloyede also commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for settling outstanding pension and gratuity obligations of federal workers, describing the gesture as a breakthrough in workers’ welfare.
“These are not just fiscal matters; they touch on social justice and moral responsibility to those who have served this nation faithfully,” he said.
NASU Deputy General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, appealed to the Federal Government to honour all agreements reached with trade unions to avert further industrial unrest.
He urged the government to demonstrate sincerity in implementing collective bargaining agreements and stop using the “No Work, No Pay” policy as a tool of intimidation.
“The ‘No Work, No Pay’ threat is nothing but a deliberate move to silence and weaken trade unions that are only demanding justice for workers,” Adeyemi said.
Also speaking, Mr Daniel Oberko, Regional Secretary, Public Services International (PSI), commended NASU for its steadfastness in promoting decent work and protecting public service employees across Nigeria.
“Public service workers are the backbone of national development. Governments must invest in them, not suppress their voices,” Oberko said.
